Sandy and I went through El Calafate three times!! We felt like locals by the third time. Must have been a really cool place to go go back that much, right? Well not really. The first time we went through it was to get to Puerto Natales. The second time we went through it was going form Puerto Natales to El Chalten and the third time it was going to El Chalten to Bariloche.
What is there to do in El Calafate? Well not very much. Its a small town, that reminds me of town you´d see in the tundra (except for the huge tourist stip in downtown). The tourist shopping is good but the main draw is the Glacier Perito Moreno about an hour away. On our second visit to El Calafate we went to see the glacier. It was HUGE and very impressive. We couldn´t see the end of it. It is 5 kilometers long and 70 meters tall!
The bus we took there gave us 7 hours to spend there, which is way to long unless you want to do ice trekking (which we didn´t). We started by walking along boardwalk that went along part of the glacier which allowed us to see the glacier from different angles. Often we would sit in one spot and just watch ice chunks crashing into the water. We would usually hear it thundering as it echoed of the water and face of the glacier. We would then quickly shift our attention in that direction to see what had just fallen. If it wasn´t for the cold we would have probably sat in one spot all day just watching. Instead we had to take hot chocolate breaks inside! We also saw our first condors flying above the glacier!!
